Events in Gubbio not to be missed
Here in Gubbio, events are more than just dates on a calendar: they’re part of our lives. We eagerly await them, we experience them… and we literally get swept up in the atmosphere. That’s why we want to share all the events that we believe are absolutely not to be missed.
Procession of the Dead Christ
On Good Friday, Gubbio is transformed, as evening falls. The Procession of the Dead Christ winds through the city streets creating an intense and solemn atmosphere, with soft lights and heartfelt devotion.
Liberation Day Celebration
On 25 April the Flag-wavers of Gubbio fill the town squares with their lively displays, followed by the Sonata del Campanone, the ringing of Gubbio’s massive historical bell and one of the city’s most symbolic traditions.
Descent of the Ceri
The first Sunday in May marks the start of the most important event for the inhabitants of Gubbio: the Ceri descend from the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo and cross the city until they reach Palazzo dei Consoli.
Festival of the Ceri
On 15 May the three Ceri – monumental wooden structures mounted on a “litter” with the statues of Saints Ubald, George and Anthony on top of them – are carried on shoulders across the city. This is a very important day of the year for us, as it’s the celebration of our Patron Saint Ubald
Municipal Band Concert
On 16 May the Gubbio Municipal Band concert takes place, in honour of Saint Ubald. It is a more intimate event compared to the Festival of the Ceri, but just as deeply heartfelt by all of us.
Ceri Mezzani and Ceri Piccoli
The tradition of the Ceri continues on the Sunday after 15 May and on 2 June. Starring in the Festival of the Ceri Mezzani (Medium Ceri) and Ceri Piccoli (Small Ceri) are youngsters and children, who keep the spirit of the tradition alive with the same energy.
Palio della Balestra
On the last Sunday in May, Piazza Grande becomes the centre of the historic challenge. The crossbowmen of Gubbio and Sansepolcro challenge each other by shooting their crossbows, aiming to hit the “tasso”, a target 36 metres away.
Luigi Fagioli Trophy
The Luigi Fagioli Trophy is one of the most spectacular uphill car races in Italy, along the Bottaccione Gorge. It takes place in July and honours the legendary Formula 1 racing driver, Luigi Fagioli, who adopted Gubbio as his home.
Torneo dei Quartieri
On 14 August, Piazza Grande comes to life with the Torneo dei Quartieri (District Tournament) and historical parades. The four city districts – Sant’Andrea, San Giuliano, San Martino and San Pietro – challenge each other in a crossbow contest.
Dusk-to-Dawn White Night Sports event
On the last Friday in August, Gubbio is packed with vibrant energy. The Dusk-to-Dawn “White Night” Sports event fills every corner of the city with a variety of sports activities. It’s open to everyone and features a direct and engaging sports experience.
Medieval Festival
At the end of September, the Medieval Festival brings historians, writers, scientists, philosophers and journalists together in Gubbio, to explore and narrate ten centuries of history.
White Truffle Market Exhibition
In October and November Gubbio is filled with the “most eagerly-awaited aroma”. The White Truffle Market Exhibition features open-air markets, tastings and the not-to-be-missed gala dinner organised by Gubbio Food Experience.
Gubbio, Christmas City
The atmosphere in Gubbio changes completely from December to January. The world’s biggest Christmas tree lights up on the slopes of Monte Ingino, while the city streets come alive with local markets, events and lights.
